Johann Christian Freund
Lady with White Veil
circa 1800
round: 5.80 cm x 0.00 cm
Vergoldeter Metallreif
Johann Christian Freund's carefully executed portrait seems rather drawn than painted, especially in the lady's curls which appear under her veil and in her shape which is clear-cut despite the scattered lighting. Since the artist used only a few shadows the portrait shows a lack of plasticity and gives a static impression. Nevertheless he achieved a charming and pleasant representation. 1
1 Johann Christian Freund has often been mistaken for the miniaturist Johann Christoph Freund who worked in Dessau and Leipzig between circa 1720 und 1750.
