Friedrich Johann Gottlieb, genannt Franz Lieder
Graf Brandt
This miniature shows a highly decorated middle-aged gentleman. 1 On his collar he is wearing the Imperial Russian order of St. Vladimir, third-class, exclusively conferred for civil achievements at the time when this miniature was created. On his breast he is wearing the Knight's Cross of the Imperial Austrian order of Leopold, donated by Franz I (II) in 1808, conferred for outstanding actions performed for the welfare of state or society irrespective of class and background; furthermore the Imperial Austrian "Armeekreuz" ("cross of the army"), the so-called "Kanonenkreuz" ("cannon cross") donated by Franz II (I) in 1814 and conferred for participating in the war against France (1813-1814), and another unidentified order. 2
1 According to tradition the sitter is a "Count Brand".
2 We are grateful to Alexander Guano, Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck, and a gentleman who does not wish to be named for identifying the Leopold order and the "Kanonenkreuz".
