Laurent was a pupil of Claudot and Durand in Nancy but lived later on in Paris where he exhibited his works between 1791 and 1831 at the Salon. He was a protégé of Napoleon' s first wife, Josephine, and her daughter Hortense. In 1808 he was decorated with an Honor Medal 1st class for his works. In 1815 he was appointed curator of the museum in Epinal. In 1832, the year of his death, he was rewarded the Legion of Honor. Apart from miniatures Laurent also painted portraits and genre paintings in oils.
