Lady in White Gown

approx. 1797
oval: 7.60 cm x 6.10 cm
Goldkapsel, rückseitig blaues Glas und Haargeflecht

Nathaniel Plimer, like his brother Andrew, a student of Richard Cosway (cf. cat-no. 33) , painted the lady with long grey-powdered curly hair in a plain white taffeta dress with a white bonnet in front of a pale grey sky. The use of aqueous pale colours is typical for English miniatures of that period. The colours are reduced to distinctively graded grey and pink shades; even the lady' s white gown is given subtle nuances of grey and pink. Whereas the gown and the background are fluently reproduced, the sitter' s face is modelled with fine regular dots. Her hair shows the "woolly" structure typical for English miniatures.
