Ritt was raised in Russia because of his father being employed at the Orchestra of St. Petersburg. Between 1781 to 1785, he studied with Queertmort in Antwerp; one year later, he travelled to Paris and completed his painting studies with Vincent. Returning to St. Petersburg in 1792, he became one of the most successful miniaturists of his time.
