The son of a goldsmith travelled to Paris for training and studied there at the Royal Academy under Lagrénée. In 1777 he exhibited at the Salon du Colisée. In 1781 he married Geneviève Legris. From 1789 to 1892 he lived in his native town Geneva where he also showed his works at the local art exhibitions. As from 1792 he worked in Paris again and exhibited minatures in the Salon of 1804.
