William John Newton

Newton, Sir William John
(London 1785 - 1869 London)
After an early training as an engraver under his father, James Newton, William John Newton turned to miniature painting. At the age of twenty-two he joined the Royal Academy, where he exhibited as well as in the British Institution between 1808 and 1863. Due to his rapid success he won patrons from the Royal family, the aristocracy and from artists' circles. In 1833 Newton was appointed court painter to King William IV and Queen Adelaide as well as to Queen Victoria and was knighted in 1837.
