William John Newton, one of the most talented English miniaturists of the 19th century, painted this portrait of a lady in harmonious colours and with a light quick brush guidance. The sitter's body shows a remarkable authenticity which is intensified by her thoughtful expression and her graceful posture. Due to his outstanding talent Newton mainly worked for members of the aristocracy and was appointed court painter in 1833.
