Heinrich Friedrich Füger
Füger, Heinrich Fiedrich
(Heilbronn 1751-1818 Vienna)
Füger is supposed to have already painted miniatures at the age of eleven and began to take lessons with Guibal in Ludwigsburg at the age of fifteen. His main interest was historical painting, in which he tried to become perfect whilst staying in Rome for five years. His financial situation, however, forced him to paint miniatures, which were highly appreciated. In 1790, Füger married an actrice of the Burgtheater, in 1795 he became academy headmaster, and eleven years later principal of the Imperial Academy of Paintings. In 1798, he had to give up miniature painting because of an eye disease and from then on devoted himself to oil painting.
