Initially the son of a cloth worker finished his training as a stonemason and then registered at the Vienna Academy to study architecture. Soon afterwards he turned to miniature painting and became the most talented student of Daffinger' s, his copies in the manner of Daffinger being difficult to distinguish from the original. He settled as a portrait miniaturist in Vienna in 1830 and rose to great esteem winning patrons from the highest Austrian nobility.
