Born in Puerto Rico as son of French parents, Pommayrac came to Paris in younger years to study under Gros and Mirbel. Famous contemporary artists like Paganini and Berlioz but also Napoleon III and Isabella II of Spain commissioned his portraits. Between 1835 and 1880 he exhibited at the Paris Salon and received several awards. He became Knight of the Légion d' Honneur and was court miniaturist to Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugénie.
