Heinrich Jakob Aldenrath

Aldenrath, Heinrich Jacob (also: Henri)
(Lübeck 1775-1844 Hamburg)
After his initial studies with Johann Heinrich Tischbein, Aldenrath studied together with Gröger at the Berlin Academy. He complemented his studies in Dresden and Paris and then started a long-lasting artistic cooperation with Gröger. Frequently both were working on one painting at the same time. Aldenrath worked in Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel and Copenhagen before settling down in Hamburg for good. He painted the Danish king and other famous contemporaries, as for example, Klopstock and Hoststrup, founder of the Hamburg stock exchange. He created portrait miniatures on ivory, lithographed and drew in sepia on pasteboard. The partnership with Gröger lasted a lifetime.
