After finishing his studies in 1814 Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath settled down in Hamburg. He worked in various cities in Northern Germany as well as for the Danish court in Copenhagen. Despite their simplicity his portraits perfectly reflect the nature and soul of his sitters which makes him a typical miniaturist of German Romanticism.
