Gentleman in Black Coat

circa 1820
oval: 7.90 cm x 6.40 cm
moderne vergoldete Metallkapsel

In this portrait of a gentleman both the sitter's body and the different textiles are convincingly reproduced. Comparing this picture with Aldenrath's portrait of a lady (cat.-no. 2002-2) it is obvious that he used different painting techniques in the reproduction of the clothes: whereas the gentleman's clothes are painted in broad bodycolour and with hatchings in the shades, the lady's white dress is reproduced with glazes. The simple composition and the sitter's accurately painted physiognomy are typical for the portraits of German Romanticism.
