Louis Marie Autissier
Autissier, Louis Marie, Jean François respectively
(Vannes 1772- around 1830 Brussels)
After an education at the École des Beaux Arts with Vautrin, Autissier served as a soldier and after being discharged, settled in Brussels, where he quickly became famous for his miniatures. He travelled through Belgium, the Netherlands and France and exhibited successfully in Gent, Antwerp and Paris. William I of Holland and the Dutch aristocracy commissioned miniature portraits by him. Apart from portraits Autissier painted historical scenes in miniature - a rare subject matter in this genre. After the Revolution, the artist assumed the first names of his father. At the same time he became court painter to Louis XVIII. Autissier had many students, among others Alexandre de la Tour and Louis Henry Fontenay.
