Grimaldi came from a noble Genuese family, studied painting by Worlidge in England and deepened his knowledge of art from 1777 to 178 in Paris. He exhibited in the Free Society of Artists from1768 to 1770, in the Society of Artists in 1772 and in the Royal Academy from 1786 to 1830. He received the title »Miniature painter of the Duke and Duchess of York«, later on similar titles from the Kings George III. and George IV. In addition to miniatures Grimaldi also painted enamels.
