Hall began to study painting in Berlin in 1756 after graduating in medicine. In 1758, he moved to Hamburg to continue his studies, from 1760 to 1766 he was taught by L`Archevêque and Lundberg in Stockholm. Later on, Hall went to Paris where he was one of Roslin`s protégés. In 1769, he became a member of the Academy and was appointed "cabinet du roi". Two years later, he got married to the daughter of a French trader, and his studio became a popular meeting place among the Parisian artists. The outbreak of the French Revolution had him run into financial difficulties, and due to his being included in the list of "proscrits", he was forced to leave his family. Spending his last years in Belgium and Holland, he finally died in England.
