Thomas Hargreaves
Gentleman in Brown Coat
circa 1820
oval: 8.60 cm x 6.90 cm
vergoldete Metallkapsel mit Email- und Steinverzierung
Hargreaves observed the posture of his sitter with great attention and used it as a means of characterization. According to original sources he regularly experimented with the composition of his portraits. 1 Apart from that he was an excellent draughtsman and miniature painter. In this portrait the sitter's features are reproduced with great meticulousness whereas the clothes are painted with a quick light brush guidance. The reduced colour palette and the sitter's pink-coloured skin show the influence of Thomas Lawrence with whom Hargreaves studied.
1 Today the documents are kept in the Local History Department of the City of Liverpool Library.
