Lady in Pink Dress with Black Lace Shawl

The lady in a pink dress in front of a dark background was painted by the female miniature painter Doucet de Suriny. Whereas the sitter' s body is almost shown in profile, she turns her face towards the observer and is looking at him with a serious and telling expression. The picture is painted in contrasting colours: The lady' s face, her torso and her dress stand out against the dark background whereas the black shawl which is draped around her shoulders contrasts with the pink colour of her gown. The colours are applied with broad, skilful brush strokes which add a great vividness to the picture.
