Rungalier studied with Johann Nepomuk Ender and Carl Josef Alois Agricola in Vienna where he lived until 1836. The dramatic cloudy sky and the draping of the clothes in this portrait of a gentleman are inspired by Isabey. The sitter's jacket with red collar and white cape resembles a uniform but cannot be assigned to a specific army corps. However, it suggests that the sitter is an officer.
