Grünbaum worked in Vienna and created portraits which are marked equally by accuracy and a lack of vividness. At first sight this portrait of a gentleman seems quite conventional but it is well thought out: the sitter is characterized by the contrast between his firm and intransigent facial expression and the softly falling curtain in the background. The contrasting colours in the gentleman's clothes underline his self-confidence and steadfastness.
