Gentleman with Red Cape and Grey Fur Cap

approx. 1750
oval: 5.20 cm x 4.10 cm
gilt-metal case

The exquisitely executed enamel portrait shows a young gentleman with obviously clean shaven head, covered by an obliquely put on fur cap, under which at his neck some still naturally frizzed hair protrude. The plain skull enhances the sitter's narrow face even more, vividly emphasising his forehead and his temples. He wears a white shirt with a smooth collar turned outward, covered by a blue velvet coat with gold fastenings and furthermore a red, fur trimmed cape, the ends of which are retained by a gold clasp.

The portrait presumably shows an artist. The individuality of his clothes, the cap and his striking hair style are not infrequent in portraits of artists. The self confidently worn and sophisticatedly assembled outfit evokes the impression of an actor. Possibly the portray was produced under the influence of Johann Kupetzky, as it is reminiscent of the latter's artists' portraits. 1
