Jean François-Marie Huet-Villiers

Huet, Jean-François-Marie, called Huet-Villiers or Villiers-Huet respectively
(Paris 1772 - 1813 London)
After his studies with his father, the painter and etcher Jean-Baptiste Marie Huet, Huet-Villiers submitted his miniatures at the Paris Salon between 1799 and 1802. Obviously he moved to London somewhat later, for already in 1803 he took part in the exhibition of the Royal Academy, where he subsequently exhibited until 1813. He was a member of the Associated Artists in Water Colour and became court miniaturist to the Duke of York in 1804. The portraits of the Duke and Duchess along with the portrait of his father had already been shown in London in 1803. Huet occasionally sent exhibits from London to be presented at the Paris Salon, among which was a portrait miniature painted on marble. Moreover he created animals and landscapes in miniature, which was quite unusual. He also dealt with copper engravings, his own portraits on the other hand being copied by fellow copper engravers. His artistic variety becomes visible in his work that includes not only miniatures but also oil and watercolour paintings of different subject matter.
