After he had exhibited in the Royal Academy in London as early as 1791, he joined the school in 1792. In 1796 he worked in Bristol, later in Dublin where he filled the exhibitions with works from 1801 to 1802. He went to Madras in 1802, 1807 to Calcutta and then lived in China from 1825. Chinnery sent paintings and miniatures to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy until 1846.
