After his training at the academy in Stockholm Pilo worked between 1734 and 1736 in Germany and Vienna and from 1737 until 1740 in Schonen. In 1740 he moved to Copenhagen and was appointed painter to the royal court of Frederick V. In 1748 he was appointed professor to the old and in 1754 to the new academy in Copenhagen. In 1771 he became director of the academy. But only one year later he fell from favour and had to leave Denmark. Pilo settled in Nyköping in Sweden and became director of the academy in Stockholm in 1777.
