Joseph Kreutzinger
Lady with Red-Black Striped Shawl
Kreutzinger portrayed this lady in a white high-waisted chemise dress in front of a dark grey background. The fabric over her breast and the lace trimming at the corsage are richly folded; her red-black striped shawl forms a colourful accent and adds a certain movement to the picture. Just before the French revolution it had become fashionable to wear unpowdered, naturally curly hair instead of artificial hairstyles. The hair was preferredly decorated with loosely attached colourful ribbons and blossom. The representation impresses through its artistic freedom; the sitter' s hair, the blossom and the ribbon are vividly reproduced. The contours of her face were drawn with auburn colour and its translucent colouring was modelled with delicate grey dots 1 .
