Lady with Pug

A young lady is sitting with her pug on a little wall, which is overgrown with grass, in front of a background of dark, gnarled trees. As opposed to the wilderness of nature surrounding her, she gives a rather calm and tired impression. To be able to look at the viewer, she has to turn her head, which was apparently enlargened by the painter. In fact, the whole representation is somewhat stiff, although the artist masterly reproduced the abundant cloths (tulle and yellow silk). The most important aspect of the picture is the striking contrast between the pale foreground and the dark background, which is even intensified by the obvious calmness of the portrayed person and the wildly growing trees.
