Lady in White Dress with Veil

approx. 1790
oval: 8.80 cm x 7.20 cm
vergoldeter Metallreif

The Warsaw-born miniaturist Lesseur-Lesserowicz worked for some time in Vienna, where he was influenced by the renowned miniaturist Heinrich Friedrich Füger and his portraits. Lesseur' s painting style echoes that of his model, as for example in the "manner of water droplet", meaning the use of delicate wet dots in modelling the incarnate parts. The appealing effect of this miniature is due to the sitter' s sensitivity and gracefulness, which the artist captured in her expressive eyes, in her dreamy and at the same time thoughtful look and in her fair, almost translucent skin. The transparent veil nestling gossamer-fine and delicately around her hair in combination with the turquoise background evokes associations of a nymph, an impression that is emphasized by her barely covered bosom.
