Miniatures from the Rococo period

in the Tansey Collection

Miniature painting of the Rokoko period is an absolutely fascinating art because of its idiosyncratic imprint and great sophistication. It is presented through 177 works out of the Tansey Collection, the probably most important private european collection of miniature art. The portrait miniature of the Rokoko is an elegant staging which centers around charm and tenderness. Individual facial features recede against the display of a beautiful ideal, of precious dresses and theatrical sceneries. Many a miniature contains hidden messages to the consignee of the miniature. Ladies in effigys often coquet, reveil and veil using masks, veils and fans. Here ladies are shown surrounded by real or visionary luxury, there they flee into imaginary worlds, posing as shepherdess, musician or goddess.

Several of the depicted persons are members of reigning families. Thus a fascinating panorama is created, depicting the persons who have effected european history in a more or less dramatic manner.

In the miniature portraits of the Rokoko era a past world becomes alive again. It is on one hand the world the portrayed have really lived in and on the other hand, and more importantly, an ideal world, that was only alive in their dreams. It was created by artists with a sense of style that's inexistant in any later period. The contemplator is invited to let his eyes be seduced by these appealing miniature masterpieces.
