Miniatures from the Rococo period

in the Tansey Collection

The Tansey Collection foundation’s  fourth catalogue examines the as yet little known portrait miniatures of the Rococo period. They are represented in colour reproductions of original size and are individually described. Amplified by well-founded essays, a general overview emerges, which up to now no publication  has yielded.

The volume is published to accompany the current exhibition which shows rococo miniature painting as an extremely fascinating art by its unique character and its high refinement. For the first time now numerous works of high quality of this epoch in outstanding colour illustrations and in their original size can be compared against each other.  The portrait miniature of the Rococo period is an elegant staged production, in which gracefulness and delicacy dominate.

Individual features come second  to the representation of a beautiful ideal, come second to prestigious clothes and theatrical scenery. Some portraits contain a hidden message for the miniature’s addressee. The ladies’ portraits abound in coquetry;  fans, masks and veils are sophisticatedly used to disguise and expose. Here ladies show themselves in the midst of real or imagined  luxury, whereas there they escape into a fictive world, masquerading as shepherdesses, touring minstrels or goddesses. Quite a few of the represented persons are members of ruling houses. Thus a fascinating panorama of individuals is formed, individuals who have  influenced  and determined European history in a more or less incisive way. The spectator is invited to become impressed and ensnared by these pictures and by these fantastically staged performances.

Miniatures from the French Revolution period

(1789-1799) out of the Tansey Collection

The Tansey Collection foundation’s third catalogue introduces european miniatures from the years of the french revolution. Colour representations of original size and well-founded texts guide through this magnificent coloured book.

This volume is published to accompany an exhibition devoted to european miniature portraits from the period of the french revolution. During these eventful times remarkably many miniature portraits have been created. The uncertain circumstances sparked the interest in portable and personal portraits. Furthermore the artists living conditions changed: many lost their patrons, and were required to compete on the open market.

This volume presents 169 miniatures in coloured representations of original size, together with accompanying texts and references to the provenance of corresponding literature. Besides the catalog it covers essays on the french revolution, fashion history, as well as previously unreleased researches on the situation of miniaturists of the appropriate time. Just as the 2 previous volumes this volume addresses collectors and art lovers alike, and at the same time it is a compendium of  this special chapter in the history of art.

Miniatures of the 19th Century from the Tansey Collection

In October 2002 another catalogue was published to accompany the second exhibition in the Bomann-Museum in Celle, which is wholly dedicated to the portrait miniature of the 19th century. The French and Austrian school, most important centres of continental miniature painting and focal subjects of the Tansey Collection, are introduced and described in extensive texts. The catalogue, which presents 135 attractive pieces including additional information on their provenance and on interesting literature, can be considered a standard work within the scientific field dealing with European miniature painting of the 19th century.
